![]() To survive, players must learn and adapt, refining skill in combat while staying hidden when necessary and practicing patience with those higher on the food chain. As you unlock more creatures, the game becomes more dynamic, and while the map of Tokyo never changes no matter which creature you choose, the way you’ll play changes radically. Animals and other creatures behaviourĭogs can easily take out smaller creatures to keep themselves fed, but herbivores like deer will have to avoid conflict almost entirely, seeking out edible plants while turning Tokyo Jungle into a sort of primitive stealth game. In Survival Mode, your mission is simply (and not surprisingly) to stay alive for as long as possible, and the nature of the food chain will force you to be mindful of the decisions you make depending on the animal you’re playing as. ![]() This makes Tokyo Jungle easy to pick up and play, but difficult to master. Utilizing a hodgepodge of Square, X and R1, players will have at their disposal all of the tools necessary to survive. Tokyo – not-so-splendidly displayed in PlayStation 2-era graphics - is split into a bunch of sectors that can be visited however and whenever, and controlling the animal of your choice is as easy as using the left analog stick. With a variety of animals to choose from (ranging from familiar dogs and cats to zoo-kept lions, tigers and more), you’ll develop a cadence with each animal, learning their individual strengths and weaknesses as you explore more and more of the sprawling city. Whether in Survival or Story mode, gamers thrust into post-apocalyptic Tokyo have little to rely on but their creature’s own wiles coupled with gameplay skill slowly built up via trial-and-error. That’s part of the game’s charm its difficulty and emphasis on learning as you go is truly enjoyable. Survival or story modeĪs such, surviving in this alternate version of Tokyo – the singular thing at the heart of the experience - proves no easy feat. The ecosystem – once entirely tamed and completely controlled by people – has been turned upside down. Even exotic creatures kept in the local zoo are on the loose. All you know, at least in the beginning, is that the disappearance of every human in and around the city led to a complete liberation of domesticated and wild animals alike. Players don’t initially know what happened to humanity, though it’s something slowly uncovered over time. In Tokyo Jungle, you play as one of dozens of animals attempting to survive for as long as possible in a version of Tokyo abandoned by humans for over a decade.
